Sinus Lift

A sinus lift, also known as a sinus augmentation, is a common restorative surgical procedure that is performed when there is an insufficient amount of bone in the upper jaw to successfully place dental implants.

When a patient’s upper back teeth extend into the maxillary sinuses, there is typically not enough bone remaining in the upper jaw to support a dental implant. This is quite a common condition, and will be confirmed with x-rays during the initial consultation with Dr. Kazemi.

Sinus lift surgery is typically performed with a combination of local anesthesia and general anesthesia. The height and volume of the maxillary bone is increased using a bone graft, which is done with bone from another part of your body, bone from another human or animal, or even synthetic bone. During the procedure, the sinus membrane is lifted upward as the bone is placed, while helps to prepare the site for dental implants and to prevent sinus perforation during the implant procedure.

Why Should You Consider A Sinus Lift Procedure?

There are a number of reasons that a sinus lift, or sinus augmentation, may be recommended before a dental implant procedure.

These are a few of the most common reasons why you may need to undergo a sinus lift:

  • Your jaw bone has been damaged by trauma
  • You’ve had a cyst or tumor removed from the area
  • You have a naturally thin jaw bone
  • You have a large sinus cavity

You have bone loss caused by periodontal disease or missing teeth

During The Sinus Lift Surgical Procedure

During your sinus lift (sinus augmentation), Dr. Kazemi will cut a small incision in the gum tissue, which will extend through to the jawbone area. When the jawbone is exposed, Dr. Kazemi cuts a small piece of the bone and pushes it gently upward to the sinus cavity. When the bone reaches the cavity, the resulting space below the newly lifted membrane is filled with bone grafting material.

After your procedure, Dr. Kazemi will provide post-surgical care instructions, which should always be carefully followed to ensure optimal healing, minimal discomfort, and a smooth recovery. She will also discuss the schedule for your surgical follow-up appointments.
